A utilização inadequada de monocultivos, na região, gerou um alto número de áreas abandonadas, por essa razão, existe a necessidade da recuperação dessas áreas através de sistemas de policultivo, tentando estabelecer condições semelhantes às existentes na floresta primária. Com esse objetivo, o Projeto SHIFT busca desenvolver um sistema de produção agrícola, através de policultivos adaptados à região tropical úmida da Amazônia, que seja social e economicamente viável. |

No campo experimental do CPAA foram plantadas algumas especies florestais como componentes dos sistemas: II- urucum x castanha-do-brasil x cupuacu x pupunha; III- parica x seringueira x coqueiro x citros; IV- seringueira x andiroba x mogno x parica, utilizando-se nas entrelinhas mandioca e pueraria como cobertura de solo (Sistema II); mandioca, milho, caupi e pueraria como cobertura (Sistema III), ambos sistemas recebendo adubacao recomendada e inoculacao com micorriza. Os tratamentos foram distribuidos em blocos ao acaso com cinco repeticoes. During the first phase of the project (january 1, 1995 until april 30, 1998), the influence of the water and element supply of tree different plantation systems on the growth and wood formation of eight native tree species (Swietenia macrophylla, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata, Dipterex odorata, Hymenaea courbaril, Ceiba pentandra, Virola surinamensis, Tabebuia heptaphylla) was investigated.
